India vs England 1st ODI: The clinical performance of Bumrah and Rohit to beat England by 10 wickets

India vs England 1st ODI; Indian Captain Rohit Sharma’s right decision to ball first after winning the toss made an unbeaten victory over England on 10 wickets at Kennington Oval, London on Tuesday. The Indian top-order fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took his career-best 6 wickets in the match to dismiss the hosts for just 110 runs in 25.2 overs. It was England’s lowest total against India in ODI history.

Bumrah started with a burst of 4-9 in five overs, sending out the best and strongest batting line-up of their side. England’s class batsmen Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Liam Livingstone were bowled out for a duck at the beginning itself making half of their fifty overs waste. But England was steer clear of the embarrassment of being dismissed for less than their lowest ODI score(86 all out against Australia in 2001).

With Jos Butler (30/32), David Willey (21/26), and Brydon Carse (15/26) that England reached a score of 110 runs. Only four double-figure contributions were there on England’s score-board. England’s number 11, Reece Topley is the only one to hit England’s only six in the match with Chahal.

Bumrah started his blast with Roy when he tried to drive Bumrah’s 4th ball. The next was Root – the world’s top-ranked Test batsman – after two balls. In the next over, Test captain Stokes was bowled out by Shami. Jonny Bairstow, the star player in the Edgbaston Test, fell for 7 edging Bumrah’s excellent delivery. This was the first time the trio, Bairstow, Root, and Stokes played together in an ODI after England’s World Cup over New Zealand 3 years ago. But they managed to score only seven runs in total in London. Bumrah’s attack in the final session of the game by cleaning up Brydon Carse and David Willey helped him exceed the 5-wicket record in his ODI career against Sri Lanka five years ago.

Mohammed Shami, along with Bumrah create a good partnership in balling and took three wickets in seven overs. With the wickets, Shami became the fastest Indian to score 150 ODI wickets, in 80 matches. Prasidh Krishna lay hold of the remaining one wicket. On the other hand, England’s bowlers could not really do much with only 111 runs on the chase. They failed to grab a wicket on the hard pitch as Indian bowlers even though they tried hard to make a movement. They kept trying short bowls but failed each time.

On the batting level, Rohit Sharma silenced all of the critics by scoring an unbeaten 76 off 58 balls with his powerful 18th century partnership with Shikhar Dhawan. Sharma scored 7 boundaries and 5 sixes in the match. Rohit scored his 45th ODI fifty, continuing his run chase. Dhawan partnered Rohit with a 31 not out as India chased the 111-run target effortlessly against England with 31.2 overs remaining. Rohit and Dhawan became the strongest opening pair of India who transits the game within 20 overs. With the win, India leads the three-match ODI series 1-0 scoring 114 runs in 18.4 overs.

With the extraordinary performance, keeping England outside the box from the beginning, Bumrah became the player of the match. A complete performance from the visitors and a disheartening performance from the host made a memorable match in the ODI series. Butler’s ODI captaincy begins here with a defeat. It’s been a tough loss for England because nothing worked in favor of England this time. But with the attacking side, they will surely be back soon. Let’s wait for the comeback on 14th June at Lord’s for the second ODI.
