India’s 1983 World Cup hero Roger Binny may succeed Sourav Ganguly as the next BCCI president. Ganguly has held the position for 3 years and now makes way for Binny. Rajiv Shukla will continue to be the vice president of BCCI. Jay Shah, who was expected to succeed Ganguly is most likely to remain as the BCCI secretary.
The BCCI election will take place on October 18. The candidates can file the nominations on Tuesday and Wednesday. Roger Binny and the other finalized candidates for the office-bearers’ posts are expected to file their nominations on Tuesday. The scrutiny of the nominations will take place on October 13 and the candidates can withdraw the nominations on or before October 14.
A BCCI meeting has been held at Trident Hotel, Mumbai and all office bearers from different parts of the country from different associations filed nominations for various positions.
Although the BCCI elections are a mere formality, Binny’s arrival for the Monday meeting of all the state representatives to decide on the five office-bearers’ posts confirms the earlier reports that he is going for the president’s post. Binny may officially take charge of the BCCI on October 8 at AGM in Mumbai.
Roger Binny, the 67-year-old former Indian all-rounder was the highest wicket-taker in the 1983 World Cup. He had a 18 wickets record in the World Cup from 8 games at an average of 18.66 which will always be his biggest hour of glory. With the wicket haul, he played a vital role in India’s triumph in the World Cup.
Binny has played a total of 27 tests (830 runs) and 72 ODIs (629 runs) to haul 47 and 77 wickets respectively from each format.
Later Binny has become the coach of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team of 2000. Also, he was the former coach of the Bengal Cricket Team. He also played the role of National team selector.
Binny is being a surprise candidate for the presidential post. Earlier, Binny’s name appeared on the BCCI’s Draft Electoral Rolls for the elections, and then he has been the representative of the Annual General Meeting. Earlier, KSCA was represented by secretary Santosh Menon.
BJP MLA Ashish Shelar will be the Treasurer replacing Arun Dhumal as per the sources. He was supposed to take the role of the Mumbai Cricket Association President.
Sports minister Anurag Thakur’s brother Arun Singh Dhumal will become the IPL chairman replacing Brijesh Patel.
Devajit Saikia will replace Jayesh George as the new joint secretary of BCCI.
